FOREWORD

Using data from the American Antiquarian Society, our project provides an analysis of the children’s book publishing industry during the 19th century. With a focus on the geographical concentration of the industry within the United States, we explore the relationship between children’s book publishing and the regional differences that America experienced in the 19th century. By combining data analysis through visualizations and scholarly research, we seek to answer the research questions below.

Research Questions

  1. How did the concentration of the children’s book industry in the 19th century impact childhood literacy rates at the time?
  2. What regional differences existed in education for children in the 19th century?
  3. How do regional literacy rates reflect American historical context and socio-cultural values at the time?
